Maryanne Almonte lives in Saint Gabriel. She's upset that more than 120 units of affordable housing are set to be built off of Highway 74 in her hometown. She's afraid her Iberville Parish community known for its beautiful country appeal will turn dangerous if the housing become a reality.

"Find another place to build that unit. Not in our area," says Almonte. "We're not going to get the right people in there. It's going to be all the wrong people. Our police department going to be over stacked with all kinds of people,"

Others in Iberville Parish though think that with all the lower income people in the area who badly need a place to live, it's good the parish is doing something to help them out.

"I think it's a great idea to build houses for less fortunate folks who really don't have the income to pay for houses that would be up to par,” says St. Gabriel resident Roddarick Jones.

The housing is being paid for with part of $40 million from the Federal Disaster Assistance Program given to the parish after hurricanes Ike and Gustav.

"It's a community of one. Everyone knows each other. It's a great idea," says Jones.

But it's a community Almonte feels keeps going in the wrong direction.

"It's seems like Saint Gabriel keeps getting the worst of the worst," says Almonte.
