After an East Baton Rouge man recently killed his girlfriend and them himself, domestic abuse prevention advocates are speaking out.

They are reminding people that there are often signs you can spot before a situation spirals out of control.

They say there are several resources for domestic abuse victims and sometimes people do need encouragement to take the first step toward receiving help.

"We do have a lot of resources - we're very fortunate these days,” stated Sharla Sossamon with the IRIS Center. “We need to just to encourage each other. There are resources out there. It should not be that dirty little secret - the shame should be on the perpetrator, not the victim."

If you think someone has been a victim of domestic abuse, you are encouraged to call the police or professionals to help them out of the situation.
