Addis residents meet with DOTD

It was the moment the neighborhood called and waited for. A chance to tell the Department of Transportation and Development just what they thought was the best safety plan and how they felt about the DOTD proposal.

DOTD will soon construct a "j-turn" at the intersection of LA 1 and Sugar Plantation Parkway, the site of three traffic fatalities just last year, and countless fender benders.

Shelli Bourque and her three children know all too well the dangers at the intersection.

"September 10, 2010, I was broadsided," Bourque said. "I'm lucky to be alive."

Her and most in the crowd want a traffic signal and not a j-turn.

"I don't get it," Bourque said. "I want a red light."

DOTD contends that the j-turn would actually be safer than a traffic light and plans for the j-turn, remain in place.

"If we put in a light, we see five-percent reduction in crashes," said Brendan Rush, DOTD customer service manager. "A j-turn, because of the different movement, we see 20-percent reduction in crashes. "

The work on the intersection should be done by this fall at anywhere between $500,00 to $1 million. DOTD said they will continue to monitor traffic at the intersection.
