JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH, LA — A 45-year-old man died last night after he hit a utility pole. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from his truck.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash occurred on Sunday, June 2 at roughly 9:00 p.m. We’re told the driver, Daniel E. Hicks, Jr., of Welsh, was driving north on LA 1131 in Jefferson Davis Parish when he went off the road while going around a curve. His pickup truck hit a pole and then overturned several times.
Hicks, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Impairment on the part of Hicks is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
The majority of vehicle occupants who die in crashes in our state are not wearing a seatbelt including 9 of the 10 people who have died in crashes investigated by Troop D so far this year. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. For SUV, pickup, and van occupants, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent. Motorists should always make the smart choice and wear their seatbelt.
This is the 10th fatal crash investigated by Louisiana State Police Troop D this year.
