A memorial service will be held today for Colin Roche, 26, of Baton Rouge after a tragic hit-and-run accident claimed his life.

The accident occurred in California where Roche was living to attend the University of California Riverside. He was a transfer student from LSU, working to obtain his undergraduate degree from the Bourns College of Engineering as an Engineering major.

The incident that claimed his life occurred on March 28 on Interstate 215. Roche was traveling down the roadway on his motorcycle when he lost control at a road transition. After hitting the center divider he was ejected from the vehicle and thrown onto the southbound lane. That’s when he was struck by a white vehicle. The vehicle did not stop and is being classified as a hit-and-run driver.

Roche’s family resides in the Baton Rouge area. According to a letter issued by the Chancellor of UCR, Roche’s parents traveled to the university in California to learn more about the life their son lived over the past year while attending the university.

“Colin’s mother indicated that he loved the beach and hiking in the mountains,” the letter reads. "Consequently, she asked to see if some of his fellow students and friends would be willing to spread some of Colin’s ashes in the ocean and at the mountains.

“When a loved one is away at college, parents and family members ‘back home’ aren’t as up-to-date on the student’s activities and accomplishments as they were earlier in life when living together. So it was understandable that Diana also asked if faculty and students would write some thoughts about Colin’s achievements at UCR. Our dean of students is working with Dean Reza Abbaschian and the faculty and students in engineering to do so. Those perspectives will be delivered by the family deacon at a memorial service yet to be held in Louisiana.”

That memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 10 at the Greenoaks Funeral Home, located at 9595 Florida Blvd. in Baton Rouge. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the service will begin at 6:00 p.m.
