A lawsuit filed in federal court targets the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. A local family is taking the EBR Sheriff’s Office to court. Robin and her son Trace Williams claim an officer from their homeowners association was stealing money and when they asked questions about it they say she was put behind bars.

According to Williams’ lawsuit, what began as a dispute between neighbors, with Association Officer Joni Karras, snowballed into what she claims is law enforcement conspiracy. Karras was allegedly writing checks to her father-in-law, a captain at the Sheriff’s Office. The suit filed in federal court yesterday claims Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, the Riverdale Commons Homeowners Association, and Joni Karras conspired against her and her family. In the suit Williams accuses the Sheriff’s Office of falsely imprisoning her because of her complaints against Karras.

We spoke to the Sheriff’s Office and they declined to comment on the case, saying they’re focusing on fighting crime.
