Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Japanese officials suspended operations at the troubled Fukushima Dai-Chi plant today after a surge in radiation made it too dangerous for workers to stay.
The surge in radiation was apparently the result of an explosion that occurred on Tuesday in the complex's unit four reactor, according to officials.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary said the workers that were dousing the reactors in a desperate effort to cool them needed to be pulled out.
Since last week's earthquake and tsunami, authorities have tried to avert an environmental catastrophe at the plant 170 miles north of Tokyo.
Many local residents have raised questions about the specifics of nuclear radiation and its effects.
