Before the Saints took to the field for the first game of the season, NBC33 News caught up with the Super Bowl champs in New Orleans. We wanted to find out how they are dealing with all the hype that has been built up around the team this season.

“Our routine, itinerary, although it’s different this week, we lean back on the practices and preparation,” Sean Payton, Head Coach for the New Orleans Saints, said during a press conference. “That’s the one thing we’ve learned from experience that serves us well.”

Coach Payton is confident this summer’s training camp has prepared his team for another run to the Super Bowl. But this will be the first time in franchise history the Saints kick off the season as the reigning world champs. Does this change the way they prepare for the opener. Tight end Jeremy Shockey says, no.

“We’re preparing exactly the same,” he said. “We’re just paying attention to detail a lot more, trying to. The emotion and every thing’s going to be there just honing in on the assignment.”

The players may say they’re preparing no differently than in seasons past, but they hype and hoopla surrounding this rematch of the NFC playoff game is hovering around the locker room. The Saints know they have bullseye on their backs now that they have a Super Bowl ring on their finger.

“Sure, yeah, it does,” Shockey continued to explain. “Everyone wants to knock off the Super Bowl champions. It’s a new season and we got the same record as everyone else.”

“It’s week one, it’s game one, it’s not the Super Bowl, we’re not going to win the Super Bowl today,” he added. “We’re not going to win the championship today, but what we can do is send a message to the rest of the league and to the Vikings that we’re here for a while.”

The game last night was a good starting point.
