HUD hurricane funds to help N.O. health clinics
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is allowing the state to use $32 million in unused disaster funds to keep 90 community health clinics open in the greater New Orleans area.
HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan made the announcement Thursday at a hearing in Washington. The funding for the health clinics comes from HUD's Disaster Community Development Block Grant money. The clinics had been running with money from health care funds set to expire in September.
U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., praised HUD's action. She says the clinics are now neighborhood anchors that support one in five residents of the area. She added that the clinics "provide valuable health services to a large proportion of working families and the uninsured."
