Groundbreaking for new Town Square
BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) – The new Town Square and Galvez Plaza broke ground in the morning on Friday, Jan. 14. This is the first step on the year-long project that is a part of the Riverfront Master Plan.
The ceremony was held on North Blvd, and Mayor Kip Holden and Senator Mary Landrieu were on hand to mark the festive moment. Members representing the Downtown Development District, the group spearheading the project, were also on hand.
This first phase of the project was funded by the City/Parish and Federal Transit Authority and costs $5.7 million. The second phase will cost an additional $1.9 million, which was provided by Federal dollars through the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
Along with other features, the Town Square will feature a new “Town Lawn,” which will be used for such purposes as holding games and showing movies. It will also be large enough to hold community events such as small concerts, fitness classes, and receptions.
Completion of North Boulevard Town Square and Galvez Plaza is set for January of 2012.
