Richard Murray, CEO of the Housing Authority of East Baton Rouge Parish and its nonprofit, Partners For Progress, recently announced that the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation has awarded $44,000 for the YouthBuild Capital City Program Bridge Fund.

YouthBuild Capital City is a program under the Housing Authority serving low-income, at-risk youth, 16-24 years of age, in our parish, who do not have a High School Diploma or GED. In addition, the program provides life and job skills training as well as career and life path planning, assistance with social services and job placement. It also offers basic construction skills training, Certified Nursing Assistant training (through a partnership with BRCC and the Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition) and is exploring providing culinary and hospitality training.

The program has been in operation for the past four years with over 130 participants and 100 graduates including 44 GED recipients. Job and post-secondary placements are now over 60% for graduates, literacy and numeracy increases are over 90%.

The Housing Authority was unsuccessful with its grant application to the United States Department of Labor for the program year 2013 – 2014. With over 200 applications for a normal enrollment of 32 students per year, these funds from the Wilson Foundation together with unspent funds from its current Federal grant will assist YouthBuild Capital City in providing education and training for up to eighteen youth from December 2013 through August 2014.

In making the announcement and thanking the Huey and Angelia Wilson Foundation, Mr. Murray noted that more funding is required to see the program through successfully this program year. Additional donations may be made through the Housing Authority’s nonprofit, Partners for Progress, with information available at 225-379-3807 or by emailing
