It was Friday afternoon when the Greenfield Police Department had a visitor.

"I've never had that happen in my 29 years here," says Greenfield Assistant Police Chief Paul Schlecht.

That visitor was a young boy who showed up alone, walked to the clerk and pulled out a bag of change from his backpack.

"He set it on the counter and said to the clerk, 'I want to donate my money to the police department,'" says Schlecht.

But the boy walked away before the clerk could get his name or ask why he gave away his $10.03.

'To have someone come in and show their appreciation for the men and women that work here at the Greenfield Police Department is very refreshing," says Schlecht.

Since they didn't have a name, police began to do what they do best, investigate!

Officers reviewed the surveillance tape, but the quality of the footage made it difficult to identify the donor.

Greenfield Police say it's important for them to tell the young boy thank you and get a few more facts straight.

"We would really like to find out the back story behind the donation. We think that there could be a really interesting and heartwarming story behind it," says Schlecht.

A heartwarming story that the Greenfield Police wouldn't mind reporting more often.
