BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Wednesday marked the second annual "SU Girls Rock Awards Show" at Southern University. The Association for Women Students recognized their peers for accomplishments ranging from the field to the classroom. They also presented awards to outstanding faculty members and advisors. The organization says they've worked hard to make sure each honoree felt special.
Nicholas Harris, Junior Class President at Southern University, said "We say we appreciate the women everyday, but it's good to have an actual program in honor of the women of Southern University. Tonight we definitely want to salute these women to tell them 'keep up the good work.'"
Association for Women Students Vice President Shenice Sam added, "I really feel like it definitely motivates them to want to be better and want to be more involved in the University. In a statement released by Southern University, AWS President Megan Henderson hopes that the event will continue to be "an annual celebration."
Glenda Llorens, wife of Chancellor Dr. James Llorens, received the "First Lady Award" last year for her dedication and support to the students. She's pleased with what the organization is doing. "The association uplifts the young women on the campus community," she said. When asked how she feels about passing along her award and seeing other women receiving awards she replied, "Absolutely on top of the world," with a smile.
Dancers and musicians performed throughout the show. In addition to writers, high academic achievers and the Southern University Royal Court, awards also went out to the women's athletic teams--many of which are at the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
