Several groups will gather Saturday to help clean up Baton Rouge. They hope you’ll want to pitch in some help, too.

The CommuniTyler Organization along with the Center for Planning Excellence (CPEX), Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful, (KBRB), and Waste Management of Baton Rouge have joined together to pick up litter and trash in Old South Baton Rouge. Volunteers will be gathering at the Baranco Clark YMCA, 1735 Thomas Delpit Drive, at 8:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Volunteers will be working from 8:00 A.M. until 12 Noon. Cleanup efforts will be concentrated in the Old South Baton Rouge area around the YMCA center.

CommuniTyler is part of a nationwide event that was founded in honor of a 23-year old man who died in a sailing accident and lived an amazing life. The idea is simple: once a year, on the same day, hundreds of people around the nation come together to hold a service day in their local community that provides an opportunity to make a difference and meet new friends. Through Baton Rouge will just be one site, we will be part of an even bigger movement across the nation. You can learn more at www.communityler.org.

This event is being coordinated with CPEX’s work to revitalize Old South Baton Rouge through smart planning and community engagement. CPEX has helped to build community gardens, developed plans for improved infrastructure and development, and organized community revitalization events. Picking up litter and trash on Saturday, May 25th in Old South Baton Rouge is just part of the bigger plan in revitalizing this area.

Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful was formed by a host of community leaders in reaction to the need to take an activist role in changing the appearance of the community by reducing litter, promoting beautification, and encouraging educational curricula for youth in our schools as a means of making a long-term impact on community attitudes toward litter. KBRB will be providing trash bags, gloves and water for all volunteers attending this event.

Waste Management is a sponsor of Keep America Beautiful, Keep Louisiana Beautiful, and closer to home, Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful. Waste Management of Baton Rouge is a community partner in this clean-up effort, providing resources to assist in removing the large amounts of debris collected in Old South Baton Rouge.
