BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University got some good news during the opening session of the SU Business and Industry Cluster meeting.
Michelle Szymczak, the recruiting leader for IBM’s new software development center coming to Baton Rouge, said they have hired at least 23 people who received their undergraduate degrees from Southern University.
Szymczak, speaking by phone to the group, said more SU grads have been hired but their numbers have not been counted yet.
The news stirred applause from the audience in the Hi-Tech room of the Pinchback Engineering Building. The group included industry representatives, Chancellor James L. Lorens, his staff and faculty in attendance.
“We are very pleased” with Southern hires, she said, adding that there will be more opportunities for Southern graduates to be hired as the company builds its workforce of some 800 people over the next two years.
Presently, she said, the company has hired over 100 people.
Most of SU hires have been in computer science but some have been in the IT field, she said.
