Students said they're prepared their futures. Over 100 students from the Project M.A.P.S. program are getting ready for the next steps in their lives.

Kenyetta Domino's about to start her senior of high school. Domino said Project M.A.P.S. helped her take what she's passion about and make it into a career.

"It gives you self-worth, and it lets you know that it doesn't matter where you come from, you always have a future," Domino said. "It helped me make a decision for my career. I just want to take this experience with me. I want to start college life. Of course after that, I want to start my career with working with children."

M.A.P.S. stands for Making a Positive Step. The program focuses giving students hands-on work experience. Ariana Artis said she did not realize how much this program would become such a big part of her life.

"I didn't think the program would help myself be a better me, and to help me with life decisions," Artis said. "It has set me up to make good decisions, and decisions that will also help me benefit my child."

Penny Collins has worked with the 16 to 21-year-olds throughout the year.

"It engages them. It gets them involved. It helps them understand what work is all about," Collins said. "It gives them an opportunity to be empowered, and it also gives them the opportunity to learn how to make career choices."

"I think it helps their self-esteem and their issues in life," Artis said. "Their questions that they're asking 'Can I make it too?'"

"It taught me what it's like to wake up every morning and go to work. It gave me a sense of self-confidence and self worth. I'm very proud of myself," Domino said.

Two of the program's participants were awarded scholarships to Louisiana colleges. Most of the students are able to find jobs after completing this program.
