BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Southern University has been making it's mark. With more and more students coming in, they've decided to make some improvements, and this includes the new student recreational complex.
Southern University students have waited a long time for the new student recreational center to get off the ground, and more than a decade later, it's here. Symone Bray and Ayanna Stivey are both students at Southern, and they couldn't be happier.
"I think it's been a long time coming for our university. We have always said we wanted to be better, build, and get bigger," Bray said. "Now, you can finally see that we're tearing the old down and building up the new."
"Well, there's been a lot that Southern has improved on since I've gotten here in 2010, and this center is a really big advancement for the campus," Stivey said. "It's going to be very convenient for the students who live in the back of campus and not have to walk or drive all the way to the mini dome to have a healthy lifestyle and workout."
"The option for our students to come together in the community besides our student union. They can come together, and they can network, exercise, get health, and get fit all at the same time," Brandon Dumas, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.
The new multimillion-dollar complex finished construction just a couple of weeks ago, but it's not open just yet. Dumas said there's more expansion on the way, but first a little demolition.
"Those dorms are known as the Magnolia Triangle, which was the home of countless alums that have created many memories and enjoyable experiences there, but in recent years, since they have been closed, they have become an eyesore here on campus," Dumas said. "We're also looking forward to that to have a chance to expand our recreational options, like adding a walking track and some other things to our newly constructed intramural facility."
In the meantime, students are looking forward to getting into the new Rec center.
"Yeah, I do plan on using it whenever it opens. I plan to be there a lot and hosting some events in there, as well," Bray said.
"I plan on getting my workout on and using the elliptical and the new equipment, too," Stivey said.
Southern will host the complex's grand opening Saturday, November 16.
