BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — We have a safety alert for you as we approach the new year. A lot of you may be going to holiday parties within the next couple of weeks. Local businesses want to make sure you stay safe if you've had one too many.
Tis the season for holiday parties, but with those parties can produce people who've had a little too much to drink.
"I think it's a pretty good idea. It keeps a lot of people that get DWI's or about to get DWI's from getting on the streets and actually hurting people," Garrett Bailey said. "It's a danger to me. I have to drive both for myself and them."
Garrett Bailey doesn't drink, but he knows the consequences of what drinking alcohol can do if you get behind the wheel.
"It costs quite a bit, and it can actually ruin someone's future," Bailey said.
In Louisiana, a DWI can cost you up to $1000 and jail time, but the Safe Ride Home program doesn't cost you anything because it's free.
"There's no charge to anybody. Guy's Towing picks up the tab," Jeffery Babin of Guy's Towing in Baton Rouge said. We'll come out and tow you and your car home, or to a safe place not from party to party, not bar to bar."
Guy's Towing participates in this effort every year, but drivers must meet certain criteria.
"You must give your keys to the driver when he arrives. Your car must start and drive, not be wrecked or have any other problems," Babin said. "If it keeps a drunk driver off the road, that's what we are trying to do."
"It's a really great idea," Bailey said. "Like I said before, it keeps everyone else safe because you are taking people that are potentially dangerous on the road, off the road."
Yellow Cab also participates in this free service. You can call Yellow Cab at (225) 926-6400.
You can also call Guy's Towing toll free at (800) 237-GUYS (4897). They offer this service in the Lafayette and Broussard areas as well.
