BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The inaugural "Red Stick Revelry" was in full effect Tuesday evening. NBC33 was in the middle of the action. Time Square has their crystal ball drop, the peach drop is in Georgia, but folks in Baton Rouge like to do things a little different with a 9-foot tall red stick. It's all going down at midnight. People we met are looking forward to turning this first time event into a lifetime tradition.
Early Tuesday, the first ever new years red stick took it's place in town square and by nightfall, it was lit up and ready to go. "We heard about the new bringing in the new year, so we wanted to
come out and see what it was like and have fun, we've done it in several other states," said Hosea Gradney who was celebrating with his family.
Come twelve o'clock, this 9-foot structure will drop into town square, ringing in the new year. There's not only people from the bayou state attending either. Leigh Ann Richmond said, "We came from east Texas, Longview, 5 hours to see this red stick drop." Dewana Dorsey agreed saying, "We jumped in the car and came on over, here we are so it's great."
And in addition to the bands, contests, and dancing, some little festival goers say their waiting on the big show, Antonio Thompson simply said his favorite part of the holiday is "watching the fireworks pop." "It's the first time, i think it's going to work real well," added Gradney.
With a little family time, a few new dance moves (as displayed by Richmond and Dorsey,) and a couple of blankets to guard against chilly and wet weather, attendees hope to make this new year, well...happy.
"Happy new year!" exclaimed Dorsey and Richmond. "Happy new year!" added Thompson.
The chilly weather and sprinkles did not stop too many people from coming downtown. Other events included a cocktail contest, and performances by Phat Hat, who rendered the "official" Red Stick Revelry song.
