Lots of people around our state make a difference, and most of them do it quietly, but nearly two dozen earned a special recognition for their generosity.

The Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana held its Volunteer of the Year Awards today at the Governor's Mansion.

Twenty-three volunteers from all over Louisiana came to accept their awards. Some of the volunteers said they didn't know this award existed until they heard they would get one.

While they were happy to receive the award, the trophy isn't why they give back.

"I volunteer to show my kids that education is important, to provide that example and to receive the joy from helping other students," stated Lafayette Parish honoree Heather Deshotel.

The volunteers said there is a lot they can do to help, even from their homes; even something as simple as organizing paperwork makes a big difference to their teachers.
