If you live in Central, city officials want you to shop local. The city's new campaign "Shop Central First" is designed to help the economic growth there.

Hope Johnson has lived in Central her entire life. She works and shops in Central, and she supports the "Shop Central First" campaign.

"When I buy birthday presents or gifts or things like that, there are boutiques all over to choose from, and if I can, I don't leave Central," Johnson said.

Johnson owns her own business. She said she understands the importance of keep money in Central.

"The farmers' markets that are around here. The boutiques that are around here... it's a bunch of small businesses, and small business is hard," Johnson said. "In a small town, I think it's got some good potential."

As a new mother, Johnson said she is too busy to shop in Baton Rouge.

"It's hard to pack everything up and leave. It takes 30 minutes to leave to go to the grocery store much less Baton Rouge," Johnson said. "It's much easier to do everything that's five minutes away."

"I think it's very important for the community to realize how important it is to shop local," Johnson said. "I think, in order for the community to survive I think it's important to shop local."

Johnson shops in Central as much as she can to help support her city's growth, and she said everyone else should to.

"I don't shop a whole lot. It's mainly groceries, but I do grocery shop here, and I get my produce from the farmers' market on Saturdays," Johnson said.

"From a city that's run off of property tax and sales tax and things like that, I think it's important to promote development and keep being a city," Johnson said.

To help this campaign, Central holds a farmers' market every Saturday to promote shopping in the town from 8:00 A.M. to noon.
