BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Hundreds of patients, caregivers and supporters are teaming up to walk for kidney health in a few short weeks. The National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana is gearing up for its 8th annual Baton Rouge Kidney Walk. Thousands are undergoing kidney dialysis right now in the state. Donations are going straight to research and expenses patients might have through the National Kidney Foundation. One nurse practitioner we met works with patients like these everyday. She says the non-competitive walk encourages patients.
Sue Cary, a Nurse Practitioner at Ochsner Nephrology, says "It's a different viewpoint for them to see us out there and working right along beside them and walking with them...Not just seeing them in that recliner at the dialysis unit." "It's a great feeling to be with them that day," she smiled.
She also went on to say that diabetes and high blood pressure are two leading causes of kidney disease. Healthcare providers will have educational information onsite. The walk is on March 29th at Pennington. For more information, click here.
