Mayor-President Kip Holden joined a group of local companies today to announce that Baton Rouge will host its first annual New Year’s Eve celebration called “Red Stick Revelry.”

The event will include dropping a custom-designed lighted Red Stick in the heart of downtown.

Holden made the announcement at Town Square on North Boulevard, noting it has become a place where people come together for everything from fitness classes, business meetings, festivals and other community events.

“It was an easy choice for me as the place to be sworn in at midnight last New Year’s Eve,” Holden said, “and the perfect place to celebrate the end of a great year, and ring in a new one.”

Holden complimented the sponsors who have funded the event and will present the iconic Red Stick as a gift to the city and the people of Baton Rouge when it is completed in December. Representing the companies who have made the celebration possible were Todd Graves, CEO of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers; Paul Favaron, President of Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Company; Patrick Browne, General Manager of the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino and Hotel; Tim Mockler, CEO of Mockler Beverage; Jack Warner, Co-Founder of Last In Concepts; and Paul Arrigo, President and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge. Also sponsoring but not in attendance at the press conference is Mike Hollingsworth, President of Hollingsworth Richards Ford and Con Lemoine, General Manager of Richards Honda.

Holden said the Red Stick Revelry event will also feature live music on the new stage in Galvez Plaza, including a performance by the popular band, Phat Hat, and a noon event for children that will offer creative activities and the raising of the Red Stick into place.

“This will continue the tradition of our other great festivals and concerts and we expect it will be a great draw for the local hotels and businesses as we give people throughout the Capital Region a great new destination for New Year’s Eve entertainment,” he added.

The Red Stick that will be dropped at Town Square on New Year’s Eve is a 9-foot low-energy LED light sculpture attached to an 8-foot aluminum over acrylic ring with “Baton Rouge” illuminated from within by LED lighting.

The Red Stick will be installed at Town Square in December and removed soon after New Year’s Day to be placed in storage until the following year. The Red Stick will be raised into position at noon on New Year’s Eve and descend from a 30-foot pole mounted on top of the existing beacon beginning at one minute before midnight. Design of the Red Stick light sculpture was by Sarah Powell of Compose Digital Design and it is being manufactured by GibKo, a custom manufacturer of LED signs and light structures.

Supporting organizations include the Downtown Development District, Downtown Business Association and Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, while proceeds from Red Stick Revelry concession and merchandise sales and sponsorships will support the event.
