BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — You can expect to see more drunk drivers booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
The Baton Rouge Police Department was awarded a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to pay for the enforcement of impaired driving, seatbelt use, speeding and underage drinking. The additional funds will help pay to put the officers on the street to curb drunk driving.
“Driving while intoxicated is a serious problem in Louisiana and across the nation, causing 30 percent of all traffic fatalities and costing the State millions of dollars annually,” Sgt. Mary Ann Godawa, BRPD, explained. “The goal of this program is to reduce the alcohol related fatalities, increase seatbelt usage and underage drinking.”
The additional enforcement hours were placed in effect on Thursday, Oct. 10.
