BATON ROUGE, LA — Baton Rouge Magnet High School (BRMHS) was ranked 339th in the nation by Newsweek magazine and The Daily Beast in its annual America’s Best High Schools list this week. The ranking was out of 2,000 high schools nationally with only one other area high school making the list.
For the last two years, Newsweek and The Daily Beast have considered the nation’s high schools with a simple conceit: to find the ones that best prepare students for college. The methodology is based on factors that have been proven to be the best indicators of college readiness: graduation rates, participation in college-level classes via Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs and acceptance into a two- or four-year college program.
According to the ranking list, BRMHS is at 99 percent for those graduating within four years with 99 percent college bound. Students who attend the school have an average SAT score of 1264 and ACT score of 25.2 with an average AP score of 3.8.
All the data analyzed for the national rankings was self-reported by each school for the 2011–2012 school year. More than 5,000 high schools to participate in the survey this year, and nearly 2,500 responded. All public high schools in the United States are eligible.
