WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today announced $375,000 in Outreach and Enrollment funding to hire additional workers at Louisiana health centers in the Baton Rouge area to assist individuals and families with enrollment into affordable health insurance coverage. The grants are provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
"Our community health centers are critical to helping individuals and families understand their health insurance options and how to enroll into the new health insurance marketplaces," Sen. Landrieu said. "Today’s funding will create Louisiana jobs and help provide health care to more than 200,000 individuals in our state.”
Louisiana has 26 health centers with 130 sites that served 251,438 patients last year, nearly 41 percent of them uninsured. With their Outreach and Enrollment funding, the health centers listed below expect to hire 59 additional workers, who will assist 93,385 people with enrollment into affordable health insurance coverage.
Under the Affordable Care Act, every state, including Louisiana, will have a new health insurance marketplace. These marketplaces function like a health insurance mall, giving consumers multiple options to buy insurance. This makes it easier for residents to gain health coverage and encourages competition among insurers to provide the best product to attract customers. Marketplaces also give small firms many of the advantages of large businesses by reducing the burden and cost of enrolling employees in small group plans. The marketplaces will be accessed online, and enrollment support will be available in person and via telephone, as well.
Today’s grants include:
- $111,000 to Southeast Community Health Systems in Zachary
- $102,000 to Capitol City Family Health Center, Inc., in Baton Rouge
- $94,000 to RKM Primary Care in Clinton
- $68,000 to Baton Rouge Primary Care Collaborative, Inc., in Baton Rouge
