The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) announced on Tuesday that 59 of the 350 metro markets nationwide returned to or exceeded their previous normal levels.

The NAHB study showed that national housing activity is at about 88 percent.

The NAHB’s Leading Markets Index ranks Baton Rouge as the number one major metro area for housing market activity and growth. According to the index, Baton Rouge is doing about 42 percent better than last year.

Representatives of the NAHB are optimistic that the housing market will continue to improve as the spring buying season approaches.

Some experts say the improvement in the housing market is directly related to improvements in the job market.

The top 10 recovering housing markets for large cities are as follows:

  1. Baton Rouge, LA
  2. Honolulu, HI
  3. Oklahoma City, OK
  4. Austin, TX
  5. Houston, TX
