BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A silver medal was gained by a Baton Rouge powerlifter who showed her skills at a world competition.
Ariel Parker just graduated from LSU. This past weekend, she represented the Tigers and the U.S. in the 2013 International Powerlifting Federation's Junior World Championships in Kileen, Texas.
Parker lifted more than 1,200 pounds combined, including squat, bench press, and deadlift, putting her in 2nd place. She placed first in squat lifting 556 pounds.
Even though this is not Parker's first time to a world competition, she said she still learned something from the experience.
"It taught me to work hard, you know. Training, you gotta focus, you gotta shut up and do it. No excuses," Parker said. "It's really taught me to not to make excuses and do what you gotta do in order to win."
Parker said she's retiring from powerlifting after competing for three years. Now, she's looking into Olympic weightlifting instead.
