BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Louisiana is one of the most obese states in the country, and two local companies want to fight this statistic.
Sixty-five percent of adults and 35% of children in Louisiana are overweight or obese, and Darryl Hurst says he hopes his new magazine will help lower that statistic.
"Louisiana is a soul-food state. Soul-food is rich with flour and other ingredients that don't necessarily promote healthy eating," Hurst said. "Our goal at Baton Rouge Health and Fitness magazine is to provide the reader with tools and resources that foster healthy living. So we focus on weight loss success stories. We focus on sports and nutrition, wellness."
The new Baton Rouge Health and Fitness magazine launches this month. Hurst said health education is a need in the community.
"Well the publisher noticed a major gap in the Baton Rouge marketplace where we didn't have a strategic focus on health and fitness," Hurst said.
Karen Sigur of the Soza Weight Loss Clinic in Prairieville agreed.
"A lot of times people think they're eating healthy, but they're not. So, until you begin to educate people and counsel people on what exactly is healthy," Sigur said. "We're going to continue to see the obesity rate grow."
Sigur teaches people everyday how to live healthier lifestyles, and she said the only way to make Louisiana a healthier state is to start making changes now.
"I'm passionate about changing that. I want to educate people. I want to counsel people. I want to teach them what is right for their body because everybody's body is different," Sigur said. "So, I know it's not always cost-effective either, but in the long run, you're either going to pay now for being healthy, or you're going to pay later."
