BATON ROUGE, LA(NBC33) — If you are thinking about starting a business in the Capitol City, apparently, you are in the right place! Entrepreneur magazine has put Baton Rouge in the top five for cities that have the right foundation for small businesses.
April Hebert worked in human resource management for nine years, but last year, she decided she wanted a business to call her own.
"Well my husband and I call Baton Rouge home. I'm a Texas native, but I'm a LSU girl, so this is just our home. So what better place to start a business because it's just a fun town and we have a fun concept going on," Hebert said. "I think I'm now at a good age. I've got some business background. I do have a business degree from LSU, and I just wanted more of a creative outlet than that provided. I wanted to have control of my own future."
Hebert came up with the concept of her gourmet popcorn shop last October, and she said there's lots of bullet points when it comes to starting your own business; You start off with a solid idea, get a consultant, and pick out a good location.
"Without the right location, any business can go down, and then from then on there's the financial piece that you have to worry about. You have to get equipment," Hebert said. "Sometimes your ideas don't always work and other times they do, but it never ends being a business owner, the process is never going to end."
Hebert said, it is not easy.
"It just takes longer than you would probably expect especially when you have contractors involved, you're on other folks schedule," Hebert said. "Hiring is a big piece, so there's always a glitch. The easiest things you think would be easy and they're not."
However, she is hopeful that the hard work will soon pay off.
"But it does get more exciting and more rewarding the closer you get to opening and beyond," Down the line, if all goes well, we may open some other locations in the area."
Popology will open next Monday, August 26th. It's located in the Bluebonnet Square shopping center on the corner of Airline and Bluebonnet. If you'd like to see the other cities on the top-five list for entrepreneurs, here's the link: http://businessreport.com/
