BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Timmy Villars has been a carhop at the Sonic on Perkins Road for a year now. He loves his job and skating, so why not apply for the 2013 Sonic Skate-Off.
"My first day at Sonic, I asked if they still did that skating thing that I heard about, and they said they had a pair in the back," Villars said. "I went and grabbed them, and since then I've done it every single day."
Timmy sent in a two-minute video to the skate-off contest showing off his skating skills. At the competition, he'll show off in person.
"Just doing what I do every day. I take orders out. I skate around and show off for my customers. I just have a good time. Preparing for it is doing the thing I love to do," Villars said. "I get to be around other people that are as passionate about this as I am. I've been doing this for so long, and I feel like I've put so much into it."
Gary Wilkerson, the president of Kergen Brothers Sonic, said Timmy definitely has what it takes to win.
"Well, skating is part of the culture at Sonic. It has been for almost 60 years. This is what we do. We deliver food to our guests with a skater," he said. "He's a great skater. He's a great kid. He's extremely excited about being in the finals, and having the opportunity to be the best Sonic skater in the country."
"I'm pretty confident," Timmy said. "I've seen the other skaters. They're really good, but I think I bring another level of just intensity and excitement to this competition. I think they're going to notice it, and I think I've got a good shot."
The skate-off is scheduled for next week in San Diego. Timmy will get a chance to win a cash prize, new skates, and hold the title of the best Sonic skater of the year.
