It was a very exciting day for 39 people in our region; they have successfully completed CARTA or the Capital Area Regional Training Academy.

"Well students, it’s been 11 weeks of struggle," Cpt. Paul Venabel said during the ceremony.

Smiles came over the faces of the CARTA 23 Class as Cpt. Venabel addressed them at their graduation Tuesday morning.

"This is all agencies working together communicating together to make a difference."

A class made up of sheriff’s deputies, police officers, the office of juvenile justice, university police and even the fire marshal, has gone through an intense 11 week course to prepare them for the real world.

“I’m sure they are tremendously relieved that will soon vanish when they hit the streets in the real word. It's one thing to train in a controlled environment, it is quite different in the real world and in real time," noted Cpt. Venabel.

Julie Mason, a new deputy, say she's so glad she can finally get to work.

"It's overwhelming it was a long experience but we all made it through.”

In his second time around, Robert Hazey was chosen by his peers as class president.

"I'm here today representing my fellow graduates of CARTA 23."

This time he chose to make a move away from EBRSO to a much smaller level.

"A university just worked out really good,” said Officer Hazey. “A lot of things that you hear going on nowadays affect students and campuses so I felt more inclined to go in that direction."

Along with Mason, Hazey is ready to get moving and start making a difference.

“The training was long and difficult we put our best into it and were just ready to get started in our careers and get out there on the streets."

This group of grads will take jobs with 19 different Louisiana law enforcement agencies.
