Renee Plummer is making history in the Baton Rouge Fire Department as the first African American woman to be promoted to Division Chief over the communications department.

It's a goal she’s been working toward since the day she joined the fire department over 30 years ago, but ask her about her new role as division chief and she'll humbly tell you it just took hard work and dedication.

"It’s really, really exciting. You know I just kind of have to maintain myself about it sometimes. And I feel blessed. You know I feel very blessed," explained Plummer.

One of Eight women in her training class, Plummer is now the only one from her original training class who is still working with the department. Those who work with her say it's no surprise she's risen so high.

"We got to hear a lot from her being on a busy truck and she just handled herself extremely professionally and made sure the communications were clear and calm and that we had what we needed," said Curt Monte, PIO for the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

"I think it's a great thing. I think it's a wonderful thing. I think it's a wonderful accomplishment on her part. But Renee is the chief of communications because of Renee. She has done what was asked of her and what was expected of her throughout her career and she's excelled at that and we're lucky to have her," co-worker Chad Major added.

Plumber said it took hard work to realize her dream, but feels any little girl can do it too.

"You know if it's something that you want to do, a career you want to pursue, don't hesitate to do that. Do whatever you need to do to get there," Plummer said.

Given the chance to do it all over again she told us, she wouldn't change a thing.

"I love the fire department. If I had it to do all over again I would choose to come, you know it's exciting. It’s really, really intriguing sometimes," she said.
