The streets that loop around City Park, Brooks Park and City Park Lake will close to motor vehicles on Saturday, June 14, from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in order to open them to recreation for BR Family Fit Day.

The streets will be used for a variety of family-oriented activities, including runs, walks (for people and pets) and bike rides.

The Open Streets event is coordinated by the Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative with the help of Ochsner, Our Lady of the Lake, Woman’s Center for Wellness, and BREC.

Plans call for a Varsity Sports run at 7:30 a.m., a Bike BR ride at 8:30 a.m., a Girls on the Run family run at 9:30 a.m., a Rocketkidz family ride at 10:30 a.m., and a CAAWS pet walk at 11:00 a.m.

On-going activities will include Adult Cardio Tennis, Pee-Wee Tennis, a chipping and putting clinic, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Slack Lining, Basic Kayaking, healthy food tastings, bicycle helmet giveaways, and much more. Fitness classes ranging from Zumba to Hip Hop to kids classes will be offered by Woman’s Center for Wellness, Spectrum, and the Y. First Aid services will be provided by Ochsner.

Kids’ activities will include BREC’s On the Geaux mobile playground, the Knock Knock Children’s Museum Imagination Playground, field day activities with the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, balloon races and games at the Ochsner tent, and many healthy lifestyle educational activities in the Our Lady of the Lake Area.

Registration for participants will be at the Baton Rouge Gallery and at the May Street Beach area. Everyone will need to sign a waiver to get a water bottle and passport for the day.

Perkins Road will be closed along City Park, but northbound traffic from Interstate 10 will be allowed to come through as far as the first entrance to the City Park parking lot so that participants can park there. Local traffic only will be allowed on the closed streets in the loop around the park.
