BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Even with an accounting degree from Southern University, Anita Simms knew it was going to be tough to find a job when she graduated.
"When i graduated I actually did think it was going to be difficult," says Simms.
And her worst fears have come true. Despite coming to career fairs like one held at Southern University on Wednesday, Sept. 12, sending out dozens of resumes and going on several interviews over the past few months, she still hasn't been able to find employment.
"With the economy and how it's going people are taking less in pay," she said. "I'm still competing with people who have already been in the working economy. People are not retiring because of the economy."
And so to survive she's had to move back home with her parents. But despite these obstacles, she still hasn't lost hope.
"I have to keep putting my best foot forward. You're going to be told 'no, no, no' time after time, but eventually somebody will say yes."
Though she says it's been challenging being without a job since May, it's definitely been a learning experience.
"Going through college and being unemployed has changed me. I have learned some new skills. I've learned things that I may need to change,” states Simms.
But with all the skills she's learned both in school and while she's been unemployed she confident the paycheck from her next job is right around the corner.
"Even though I'm unemployed that won't be for very long…as long as I believe in myself and show my leadership, I can succeed," says Simms.
