Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White paid a visit to local Catholic school principals participating in the state's voucher program.
The meeting covered the ups and downs school officials have meet with since signing up for the program and taking on the new students.
Many voiced concerns with the short notice of signing students up for school once they'd been notified of their acceptance, but overall, administrators touted the success of the program.
“What I am seeing is kids in seats and educators working very hard to improve what's going on in the class room,” stated White. “It's an extremely exciting time - our students are working at it, teachers are working at it, our parents have gotten in more aspects of what they need and that's all good news.”
The Diocese of Baton Rouge accepted 424 students in to its schools under the scholarship program.
Superintendent Melanie Verges with the Diocese said they're hoping to expand and open their schools up for more scholarship students if the space is available.
