East Baton Rouge Parish Schools are making dramatic improvements, even if they're hard for outsiders to see. That’s the message delivered by Superintendent Bernard Taylor at today's Press Club luncheon.

Taylor cited the district-wide "school performance score" which ranks in the top 20 in the state, which is an improvement compared to last year. He says that's especially true for math and science, where local students are improving twice as fast as the statewide average.

Taylor also mentioned the new truancy center, which is bringing parents and community leaders together to help keep students in class.

"They know what resources are available to them, so that we can proactively make sure that students' issues around truancy and attendance are dealt with in a timely manner," he said.

Taylor said that these improvements have come at the same time that the school system had to cut $80-million from its budget.
