BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Students aren't the only things growing at Howell Park Elementary School.
The school has a brand-new teaching garden. Students planted a variety of fruits and vegetables today, which they'll be able to harvest at the end of the school year.
The project helps them learn about nutrition and good eating habits and getting to make the garden has shown the children that healthy foods can be fun, too.
"They're having a blast,” Andree Padial, Howell Park pre-k teacher, said. “From building the boxes to filling it with dirt and putting their plants in and every day, our classroom is very near, and we'll be able to watch the whole process of them growing."
Howell Park is the third local school to have a teaching garden, which was paid for by Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
