Southern University will celebrate its 2012 Founders’ Day with a series of activities including a concert, exhibits, basketball game and a gala. The activities, which revolve around the theme “Renaissance Southern University: Strengthening the Gift of a Strong Foundation,” will be celebrated March 4 through 9.

The following is a list of activities marking Southern’s 132-year history:

At 6 p.m., March 4: Founders’ Day Scholarship Concert, “Heart & Soul – A Perfect Harmony,” featuring the SU Concert Choir; Alvin Batiste Jazz Institute’s “Jazzy Jags,” and the world famous Dancing Dolls.

On March 5: The John B. Cade Library will have exhibits comprised of photos and biographic sketches of each of the founders of the university. There will be a special A.Z. Young Louisiana Civil Rights display. A biography of the late civil rights leader, featuring a video presentation of the timeline of the historic 1967 Bogalusa to Baton Rouge march, will be on display along with personal memorabilia donated by Young’s wife.

March 6: SU AgCenter will hold an open house and tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

March 7: The Southern University Law Center will hold a commemorative program and reception at noon. There will be exhibits, videos and artifacts highlighting the first law librarian and students and capturing the history of the Law Center.

Also at 6 p.m., the Southern University Laboratory School will hold its Winter Concert in Debose Hall. Admission is $2.

On March 8: At 8 a.m., a Community Worship and Prayer Breakfast will be held in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Union. At 9 a.m., the SU Lab School will hold a pilgrimage and ceremony on campus at the Clark Gravesite. The 2012 Founders’ Day Convocation will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center. SU alum and former congressman attorney Cleo Fields will be the guest speaker.

On March 9: a Student Government Association-sponsored charity basketball tournament begins at noon in Seymour Gym. Cost is $2 or non-perishable food items.

The celebration will culminate at 7 p.m. with the SU Alumni Federation Gala in the Cotillion Ballroom. Tickets are $75
