Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Members of the Southern University Faculty Senate gathered together to discuss recent faculty layoffs and what they say is a communication problem between Southern University's President and Chancellor.
Faculty Senate President Dr. Sudhir Trevedi says both the president and chancellor continue to give the faculty little information on where budget cuts will be taken.
Dr. Trevedi also says the faculty does not know an exact number of how much of a budget cut is necessary.
So far, the university has laid off 50 faculty members, ten of which were tenured positions. Now, Dr. Trevedi says faculty members fear for their jobs.
"When every tenured faculty member thinks that he is under the gun in the absence of any defined criteria on who should go and who should not, that affects everyone's psychology,” said Trevedi. “It brings down the institution as a whole.”
Yesterday, Southern's Chancellor James Llorens announced a potential increase in tuition; he said it’s due to declining enrollment, which has led to a decrease in state funding.
