BATON ROUGE, LA — Chief Tidwell and his staff have been at Southern University since Thursday to take part in celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the University’s Urban Forestry Program.
Today, Friday, Oct. 12, there was a ribbon-cutting event to designate a section of the campus near the Student Pavillion as an outdoor forest classroom or Educational Forest.
The typical forest projects are designed to reduce erosion while giving students, at all levels, a chance to teach people in the area about the importance of natural resources.
The outdoor workshop will also include hands-on projects for a Youth Summer Institute — an enrichment program that introduces high-school seniors and recent high-school graduates to urban forestry and other agricultural professions, according to the Forest Service.
Southern is one of only a few Historically Black Colleges with an Urban Forestry program.
