"We're looking at probably more than 82 positions that either are vacant positions that we wouldn't fill or positions that we will have to lay off," says Southern Chancellor James Llorens.

The Southern University Board of Regents, on Tuesday, shot down Llorens' plan to force furloughs on tenured faculty by voting against a financial emergency. Now, he says the only move left is to fire Southern University employees, "It's not an easy task at all. Unfortunately, we have to operate with a balanced budget with student enrollment declining, with a reduction in revenues."

Students, like Southern University student Bryson Alexander, say it's tough to see their school suffering, "They're pretty much dedicated to Southern University, but unfortunately the funding cut great people and it's gonna be really, really hard to see them go."

Chancellor Llorens says Southern University could face this same problem with next year's budget if enrollment drops again, "What we'll have to do is investigate these matters that we can implement in the spring and the beginning of the summer semester of next year. So, we'll look at all those things as we move throughout the year."
