Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — World AIDS Day is December 1, and observing it is especially important here in Baton Rouge.
Southern University is using the date to remind people Baton Rouge has one of the highest aids rates in the country.
Various organizations are on campus today, handing out information to educate students about the virus that currently has no cure.
There was also an opportunity for people to get tested.
Almost 80 percent of new HIV cases affect African-Americans, and organizers hope that stat turns some heads.
"We definitely want to get that message out that you need to get an HIV test because it's affecting African-Americans by the vast majority," stated Darnell Pledger with the Center for Social research.
Currently, Baton Rouge has the second highest AIDS rate in the country.
