Eighth grader Ramey Payne hates to go to school.

"It makes me not want to go to school anymore," she said.

She feels like a prisoner every time she walks through the doors of Central Middle School.

"I used to love to go to school. I used to love to see my friends. I used to love to see my teachers, but now we just can't interact. Why would I want to go there anymore?” Payne said.

She and her mother Dianna say from the time she and other students get on the bus to the time they leave nine and a half hours later students are barely allowed to even open their mouths.

"Many of the buses don't allow them to speak from the time they are picked up in the morning, the entire ride home. They get to school, they're not allowed to speak as they go into school," says Dianna Payne.

And while they can talk in class if called upon, it all changes once the bell rings.

"When they're finished with a class they're taken from one class to the next class on a line that's on the floor and they're escorted by a teacher. They're told to remain completely silent," says Dianna Payne.

I asked about the policy at the school. District Superintendent Michael Faulk wouldn’t sit down for an interview, but would only say: "It's a board policy and the district is following the policy that the board has set."

But Dianna feels the district is more interested in enforcing the policies and less focused on its students.

"When you take away individuals' students' rights to be able to express themselves in a creative way. You're taking away the very rights that we have been fighting for for 240 years. These are rights. They don't stop just because you're a student. They don't stop when you walk through the doors of the school," says Dianna Payne.

And Dianna isn’t alone. More than 100 have joined her private Facebook page to protest how the school district is treating its students.

"This is not about my daughter. This is about all of our daughters, all of our sons. This is about parents who feel that the school is overstepping our parental rights to teach our children what is appropriate and what isn’t inappropriate," says Dianne Payne.

What most of you don't realize is the teachers encourage the kids to speak to their parents concerning, the rules. They don't agree and are scared of speaking out. The parents speak out and then you all think its ridiculous??? The ACLU needs to be involved and yes the students DO have rights. As for your name calling on this post, that is a form of bullying as well. I suppose you think name calling is acceptable? Only a narrow minded narcissitic bully does that.

And this is news? This is nothing more than a purple-haired mother teaching her burgundy-haired 8th grade daughter how to be rebellious. In 1-2 years, Central schools will pass the other neighborhood school district and move into 1st place in the state academically, no thanks to Ms. Purple. The time between classes was reduced so that an additional period of INSTRUCTION could be added to the school day. What Miss Burgundy needs is structure in her life. Too bad she doesn't get that at home.

Io agree!! As an educator myself (yes - at Central Middle years ago), it's called STRUCTURE!! Wow.... You mean they actually focus on the EDUCATIONAL process?? Horrible!! Newsflash: it's a FREE public school and attended is OPTIONAL. If its so tormenting, then youre free to enroll your child in a private school for tuition. Good luck getting an equal, let alone better education for your child, though. Hey, but he/she will be allowed to run wild as will the rest of the student population.....

It is not a free public school!!!!!! (You idiot) MY taxes as well as HER taxes pay your salary and for that school.......I can't recall...did you imply that you are an educator, thus EDUCATED? I am a taxpayer and a resident of Central...I have the right to insert myself (just as she does) in the rules and policies of OUR schools. geez....get a grip

Well this is just ridiculous! If all parents were teaching their children what is and isn't appropriate, wouldn't a teacher's job be so easy? There has got to be order in schools for there to be safety and for learning to take place and bottom line, children need to learn to follow rules, It is a parent's job to teach her/his child that we don't have to like the rules, but they are in place for a reason. Purple hair mom, really? Rebel behavior, perhaps.

Also, I love the ridiculous comment that children are losing their "rights" that have been fought for. What "rights" cover talking in school? I must have gone to a school that didn't cover that part of the Constitution, or maybe I was just too busy talking.

I agree. I have four children in the Central School system. Let's all complain about having one of the top school districts in the state. Let's force the schools to go back to the East Baton Rouge School district where our kids can receive one of the worst educations in a state that ranks 48th in the nation in public education. I personally do not pay for my kids to attend a social gathering, I pay to have them educated.

Central Citizen, shame on you!!! Don't put blame on the news for reporting a parents concern for thier child. There really is alote more to the story. I personally know the Payne's and I have a child in cms. I have concerns also . "Hats off " to channel 33 for letting us have a voice in our "community"!!! And FYI the school is not out of control, some of the RULES are!!!!

Central citizen you must be out of touch with reality. School is not supposed to be like that at all it should be fun. From what I read here its no more than a legalized concentration camp in central. Lets get our heads out of the stone ages people. Central wake up and smell the coffee you are not making a good name for yourself! Why would I want to send my kids to that school?

This is more than a student and her mom. This is many parents tired of the prison like atomosphere in a middle school. A sheriff in the hall directing 7th graders to walk a straight line with no talking and being escorted to each class is the most ridiculous "rule" I have ever heard of. No back packs allowed, is another "rule" that is ridiculous, especially since the school didnt live up to its end of that bargain. Online text books or hard copies for home have not been given. PUBLIC SCHOOL

This is real news.

i am a student of central and i agree with this we are not allowed to do any of these things.no booksacksno wrong color socks even if you wear pants.its jacked and its a 1x1 tile that we have to walk on.you arent allowed to preserve peirced earing holes if youre a guy.i agree with no peircings on the face because it is a little much at school but cmon our ears!really since this new school we have got outrageous rules.our old school had far less rules and we had longer classes.we still have order

Shame on you Channel 33 for even airing a story such as this. Today must have been a really slow news day. A student and her mom not liking that a school is doing nothing more than enforcing rules to keep order is not news. Hats off to the school administration for restoring order to the middle school which was out of control. Go find some real news to report!!

Shame on you for thinking you know everything!

It is terrible! Central Middle is like a prison, cant talk, teachers have to walk us from class to class on a line and we cant do anything, 15 people got suspended for bringing booksacks to protest against the binders today. We all hate central middle and want to leave! Central is insane!!!!

WOW!! CMS is not letting the tail wag the dog. Awwww...... It's called EFFECTIVE EDUCATION!! Kudos to CMS!!!!!

You dont even know the story, or the school. I am a student here and these rules are outrageous. We can't even have backpacks. This is an important topic. If it doesn't involve you, then don't worry about it. It have nothing to do with you. A student should have rights and not only have to follow these stupid rules. Thank you very much.

Hats off to Ch. 33. I would have expected
most liberal socialist lapdog media types
to go with the government over the people.
Congrats to Ch. 33 for accidentally doing
journalism.
