Kids at Runnels gained a fun learning activity from the Baton Rouge Police Department today.

Preschoolers got up close and personal with a couple of horses from the Baton Rouge Mounted Patrol Unit. They also got to meet a couple of officers from the unit.

That unit of the Baton Rouge Police is a big part in community policing. The horses are used for crowd control and to patrol certain part of downtown on weekend nights. They're also used as a way to help deter crime at larger events.

Their teacher says it was quite the learning experience.

"The children are able to learn in an age appropriate way, which they do a fantastic job about the horses,” Andi Holliday said. “They're able to learn about the importance of what they do and to respect what they do as well."

The event was part of the preschool's annual community helper week.
