BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Since the Recovery School District took over several Baton Rouge schools, the administration has been planning to hand those schools over to charter organizations.
"These charters today were approved through BESE and once they were approved through BESE they did start engaging communities to see what would be the best fit for them," explained RSD superintendent Patrick Dobard.
But the big shocker came when superintendent Patrick Dobard announced only five of those schools were going to transition in to the hands of charter organizations. Both Glen Oaks Middle School and Istrouma will be shut down after the 2013-2014 school year..
"One of the things with the high schools is they're so severely under-enrolled and so what we're doing is we're going to have the students at capitol, we'll see them with increased enrollment there. and then we're going to spend the year, one, getting the building in better condition, then two we'll site an operator that's going to build a grade at a time," said Dobard.
Anissia Green and her two children are all Istrouma alumni, she said she was floored when she heard the RSD would be closing the historic school next year.
"I just think it's a devastation for the 70805 community to no longer have this particular school at the corner of 38th and winbourne," said Green.
Dobard said the closure though is not planned to be permanent, and the administration plans to come back better than ever.
"We have the opportunity to take a pause and that's what we're doing at Istrouma, we're going to make certain that we get a very strong operator that's going to work with the community and share the vision of what we'd like to see as a new high school in 2015 at Istrouma," said Dobard.
Green explained that even if the school re-opens, the damage will already be done.
"I understand that you don't want a school in your neighborhood just because there is a building there, you want a school that's high performing, high achieving and I don't feel that Istrouma has been given that chance," said Green.
Students from Istrouma will be guaranteed enrollment at Capitol High, and those at Glen Oaks Middle will be guaranteed enrollment at Crestworth Middle.
