BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Two groups continue to battle over the creation of a new city in East Baton Rouge Parish. Both are focused on the impact the new city would have on public schools, but have very different opinions on the possible results.
In September, Local Schools for Local Children announced its intention to create the City of St. George, which would include certain areas of Baton Rouge currently considered to be unincorporated.
Organizers must collect at least 25,000 signatures before the process can move forward.
The effort is an attempt to build a stepping stone for a new school district in the parish. Although the organization has brought the issue to the State Capitol for the past two years, it was rejected by the House both times.
Along the way, the One Community, One School District group has opposed the creation of a new school district. The group believes the cost of the new district will outweigh its benefits.
On Thursday, Oct. 10, the One Community, One School District will hold a public meeting to discuss those issues. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Bluebonnet Library (9200 Bluebonnet Blvd).
