New top cop starts first day on Southern’s campus
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Ronald Stevens started his first day on the job today, Monday, Oct. 24, as the new Police Chief on Southern University's campus.
The thirty year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department says his first goal is to increase the number of police officers in his department. He also wants to build the relationships between his officers, and the student body.
"Make sure that the students understand that we're here for them,” Stevens told NBC33 News. “They are actually the ones that are hiring us. We’re actually working in their community. We want to make sure that they understand that we are there for them and we're going be there for them as much as we possibly can."
Stevens says he's even willing to take a pay cut, if Southern University continues having budget problems.
Today was also the first day of a week long homecoming celebration. Click here to see a full list of the events planned for the week.
