Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) —
Mayor Pro-Tem and candidate for Mayor-President, Mike Walker, issued the following statement today regarding the sudden closure of public schools tomorrow in East Baton Rouge Parish:
"This shameful decision to walk out of class tomorrow proves why our public schools are broken - teachers' unions put their own interests ahead of educating our children. I call upon interim Superintendent Carlos Sam to do the right thing and tell the unions to send teachers back to school tomorrow. Truancy is a large enough problem as it stands in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools. We don't need unions adding to the problem by making our teachers truant too. This selfish decision has also forced the cancellation of bus service for private and parochial school children, costing working families yet more money."
