The Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine has received a $40,000 grant from the Coypu Foundation to support its wildlife outreach education program. The WHL currently gives presentations throughout Louisiana to K-12 educators and their students, teaching the importance of wildlife conservation, with an emphasis on Louisiana wildlife. The Coypu Foundation is an organization founded by the estate of the late John S. McIlhenney that supports environmental and ecology projects.

With the Coypu grant, the WHL will be able to purchase a 12-passenger van to transport up to six staff members and veterinary students along with up to six wildlife animals. The WHL will also be able to provide educational materials that match the professionalism and integrity of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. The materials will consist of K-12 curriculum and activity guides emphasizing different topic areas, such as wildlife habitat, aquatic wildlife, and sustaining wildlife. The WHL has been included in the curriculum of various middle and high school biology classes.

The WHL educational program goal is to develop awareness and knowledge, resulting in responsible behavior concerning wildlife and the environment.

“This grant allows the WHL to maintain a consistent educational program with a primary focus on the children of our state,” said Javier Nevarez, DVM, PhD (LSU SVM 2001, 2007), assistant professor of zoological medicine and director of the WHL. “It also allows us to incorporate new and modern teaching tools into our educational program. Being able to have our own vehicle will also help us in the transport of injured and rehabilitated animal in the state.”

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and its Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana is sincerely grateful to the Board of Trustees from the Coypu Foundation and the Whitney National Bank for their continued support of the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana.
